Bookshops opened early on Tuesday as the Duke of Sussex’s controversial memoir hit the shelves – but queues were sparse following days of leaks ahead of the book’s publication. Just one person was waiting outside Waterstones’ flagship branch in Piccadilly in central London when it opened at 8am. Other royal fans had queued for midnight store openings, with a handful waiting outside WH Smith in London’s Victoria station to be one of the first to buy a copy.

he Duke of Sussex has branded the Prince of Wales his “arch nemesis” in his bombshell book, claiming he was physically attacked by William and knocked to the floor during a confrontation over the Duchess of Sussex. Multiple leaks and the accidental sale of Harry’s memoir, Spare, in Spain resulted in a flurry of explosive revelations from the duke’s autobiography, due out next week. Among them, Harry alleges it was William and the Princess of Wales who encouraged him to wear a uniform to a fancy dress party 2005 and “howled” with laughter when they saw it.

The broadcaster said the 90-minute programme, in which Harry was interviewed by Tom Bradby as part of the promotion for the duke’s memoir, Spare, ahead of its release on Tuesday, achieved the channel’s highest rating for a factual programme for more than a year. In comparison, the second episode of series three of BBC One’s Happy Valley, which started at the same time – 9pm on Sunday – and lasted 60 minutes, had an average audience of 5.3 million TV viewers, according to the overnight figures. Royal biographer Angela Levin says Prince Harry's behaviour is "inexcusable" and she "can't imagine how he's become so ridiculous."

The Prince of Wales has kept quiet about a string of explosive claims by his brother the Duke of Sussex “for the good of his family and the country”, friends have said. William will not retaliate because he is “dignified and incredibly loyal”, one close friend of the pair reportedly told the Sunday Times. “William is a sitting duck because Harry knows he isn’t going to retaliate. How many shots can you take at a sitting duck?” the source told the paper. “It’s cruel, cowardly and so sad for William to keep taking the punches. He’s keeping quiet for the good of his family and the country.” The same friend adds that William is “burning” on the inside.

Harry claimed “planting and leaking” from other members of the royal family meant, in his mind, they had written “countless books” and “millions of words … dedicated to trying to trash my wife”. The duke also said in an interview with Tom Bradby on ITV that there was a “horrible reaction” from his family members when the Queen died. He said his brother “raised some concerns” about his marriage to Meghan Markle and of how his father the King blamed himself for his son’s struggles, telling him “I should have got you the help you needed years ago”. Speaking to TalkTV's Kevin O'Sullivan, Royal Biographer Angela Levin criticised Harry's biography as 'trash, rude and full of lies.'

The Duke of Sussex’s memoir Spare has sparked a protest in Afghanistan after he revealed that he killed 25 Taliban during his time in the British Army. Around 20 students staged a protest at a university in Helmand province where Harry was stationed, the AP reported. “We condemn (Harry’s) action which is against all norms of humanity,” one protester said. Others carried posters showing Harry’s portrait with a red “x” across it. Sayed Ahmad Sayed, a teacher at the university, condemned Harry for his role in UK military operations in Afghanistan. “The cruelties which have been committed by Prince Harry, his friends or by anyone else in Helmand or anywhere in Afghanistan is unacceptable, cruel,” he said.
